Students and staff at other UK universities

Find out more about joining Senate House Library as a member of staff or student from another UK university.

Current academic staff (excluding retired staff), postgraduate research students (for example, PhD and MPhil) and emeritus professors at UK universities are entitled to free annual reference membership (or may apply through the SCONUL scheme).  

SCONUL membership 

Those with valid SCONUL Access (Band A and Band B) are able to join the Library for up to one year and are entitled to a 4 book borrowing allowance. 

Please apply for SCONUL Access via your home institution and bring your authorisation email to the Library. Documentary evidence stating your student or faculty status within the institution is also required, along with photographic ID and proof of address.

UK students and academic staff at other universities (PhD, MPhil) with SCONUL Band AFree borrowing (4 books) and onsite access to eResources
UK students at other universities (part-time, distance learning and placement students) with SCONUL Band BFree borrowing (4 books) and onsite access to eResources

Current academic staff and postgraduate research students at UK universities

UK research students and academic staff at other universities (PhD, MPhil) without SCONUL Band A Free reference onsite access

Other categories of students and staff at UK universities

Current undergraduate, taught postgraduate students and all other full-time students and staff at UK universities can join Senate House Library for 3 months or 1 year. This membership includes a 10 book borrowing allowance and onsite access to our eResources

A valid university ID card is required as evidence of student status along with photographic ID and proof of address.

Renew online

If you have previously registered with the Library as a member of a UK University and are still a member of that University, you can renew your Library membership by emailing shl.membership@london.ac.uk a copy of your current University ID card (and a copy of your SCONUL access Band A or Band B email if applicable).
