British Council award success for àËÅöÊÓƵ alumni

Three àËÅöÊÓƵ alumni from across the globe have been recognised at this year’s British Council Study UK Alumni awards for their respective accomplishments.  

At the Bangladesh awards ceremony in Dhaka on 8 February, alumnus and entrepreneur Mohammad Taqi Yasir was awarded the Social Action Award for his work founding the Footsteps initiative. Mohammad, a àËÅöÊÓƵ LLB graduate, is the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions including the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia in 2022 under the Social Impact category

Meanwhile, MBA alumna and business owner, Dr Ugonna Nwakanma was a finalist of this year’s Nigeria Study UK Alumni Awards in the Business and Innovation category for her visionary work as founder of Eyewise, revolutionising eyewear styling in Nigeria. Eyewise has also evolved to an Eye Care Centre which provided free community screening in remote areas and corrective spectacles as a way of giving back to society.

Last but not least, LLB alumna and MP in the Turkish Parliament, Pelin Gundes Bakir was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Istanbul National ceremony on 29 February. Through her work as an MP, Pelin has promoted the importance of women in leadership, appearing in interviews with the BBC, Channel 4 and Turkish television. Pelin has served in the Turkish Grand Assembly and at an international level at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Women, advocating for the rights of women in her constituency and beyond.

The Study UK Alumni Awards take place every year and celebrate UK higher education and the global achievements of alumni of UK universities. Now in its tenth year, the award received more than1,450 applications from international UK alumni in 100 countries, representing more than 140 UK higher education institutions across the UK.
