Professor Colin Bailey CBE

Professor Colin Bailey CBE is currently the President and Principal of Queen Mary àËÅöÊÓƵ, a Russell Group University with a history dating back to 1785.

The University has 32,000 students, over 5,400 staff and a turnover of c.£630m. He is an internationally recognised Chartered Structural, Civil and Fire Engineer who has authored more than 140 research papers and practical design guides.

After leaving school at 16 he began his career as an apprentice draughtsman, obtaining a BTec through day-release and night-school. He worked for construction and consultant companies Lovell Construction, Cameron Taylor Partners, and Clarke Nicholls and Marcel, before being accepted to study a degree at Sheffield University through their widening participation programme.  

Following his PhD, he returned to industry to work for the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) and the Building Research Establishment (BRE), before joining the University of Manchester in 2002 as Professor of Structural Engineering.  He became Head of the School in 2007, Vice-President of the Faculty of Science and Engineering in 2009, and then Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2014.

Over his career he has gained significant non-executive experience, including as a non-executive chair, sitting on the Board of a number charities and organisations.  He is currently a member of the Independent Expert Advisory Panel advising government on building safety following the Grenfell fire, and is a Board Member of Universities UK (UUK), UCEA, UCAS, UCL Partners, and the Russell Group. 

Professor Bailey is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to engineering in the 2020 New Year Honours list.
