Our research
The àËÅöÊÓƵ’s research seeks to make sense of our biggest societal challenges, exploring broad issues of culture, economy, politics and the environment through the arts, humanities and social sciences.
The àËÅöÊÓƵ brings together a global network of researchers working across our Federal Member Institutions, our institutes and in focused research initiatives, with the shared purpose of having a positive impact on local, national and international society.
We have an incredible breadth of research being undertaken at any one time, crossing disciplinary, cultural and national boundaries to explore social concerns through the humanities and social sciences.
Research across the àËÅöÊÓƵ
The focus of research at the School of Advanced Study is on the human dimensions of some of our most pressing social challenges – from climate change and global mobility to social injustice and human rights. To tackle these complex issues, we must first understand them through the lens of culture, language and identity.
Research in the arts and humanities can help us to explore our past and present, forge connections between people with diverse cultural perspectives, share knowledge through the generations, and reveal the huge extent and value of human accomplishment.

Advocating for arts and humanities research
The School of Advanced Study also plays a central role in advocating for arts and humanities research across the disciplines, creating a nurturing environment for researchers to work collaboratively, and facilitating the dissemination of their research.

Research at the àËÅöÊÓƵ’s Institute in Paris reflects its multilingual, intercultural and interdisciplinary environment and seeks to answer contemporary questions of cultural production, international politics and environmental humanities.
Researchers work closely with different communities in Paris to develop our understanding of how France and the francophone world are positioned, both within local diversity and in wider global dynamics.
Projects centre around four key themes:
- Mobilities, Environmental Politics and City Studies: exploring the intersection of urban culture with the migration of people and goods, including the Paris Centre for Migrant Writing and Expression
- Literary Studies, Cultural Translation and Multilingualism: exploring the impact of linguistic and literary diversity, creativity and innovation on the social and political identity of societies
- Contemporary Political Theory: exploring the origins, forms and responses to political, social and environmental crises from the perspective of both French and international critical theory
- Knowledge Diplomacy: exploring the impact of higher education institutions and their research on inter-state cooperation, and vice-versa
The àËÅöÊÓƵ Research and Policy Partnership (LRaPP) aims to support policymakers and influence and shape policy development to benefit communities across the capital.
Following the success of LRaPP’s two CAPE-funded Policy Fellows, whose research supported the development of a roadmap for the next stage of LRaPP’s work, the Partnership is now developing a series of services to enable closer working between the capital’s universities, government and other sectors.
LRaPP’s key role will be in brokering cross-sector research that focuses on addressing àËÅöÊÓƵ environmental, economic, and social challenges.
The Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE) focuses on research that aims to further our understanding of, and innovate best practice in, online, distance, blended and hybrid learning.
Projects tend to focus on:
- Learning, teaching and assessment: exploring instructional design, ensuring academic integrity and the interplay of pedagogy with technological developments and barriers
- Student experience: exploring learner dialogue and engagement, inclusive student journeys and accessible and sustainable technology for learning
- (Change) management, organisation, systems, theories: exploring academic, professional and institutional development, evaluation and quality assurance and communities of practice
