The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), Ƶ, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research organisations. It has a long track record in excellent research that benefits cancer patients, and is a world leader in drug discovery, genetics and precision radiotherapy.

The ICR ranked second in the (External website) in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) and first for biological sciences.

The ICR’s mission is to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. It carries out high-quality basic research and translational studies, and with its partner The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust conducts a programme of innovative clinical trials. The ICR and its partner together form one of the world’s top four centres for cancer research and treatment.

The ICR was founded in 1909 and joined the Ƶ in 2003. It is situated on sites in Chelsea and in Sutton, and has state-of-the-art research facilities and an exceptional programme of postgraduate research. It offers postgraduate research degrees (MPhil, PhD and MD (Res)) as well as a modular postgraduate taught degree in oncology. All research students receive advanced scientific training at the cutting edge of cancer research, guided by a faculty of world-class researchers.

ICR alumni go on to great success in academia and industry around the world. Around 79 per cent of the ICR’s non-clinical students take up scientific research roles at institutes and universities worldwide within a year of leaving the ICR.
